Hello lovely hikers
I hope everyone that went hiking today had fun, apologies to those who we could not take because a couple of our leaders were unfortunately ill. We had a great week last week, I hear the social went down a storm, I received some brilliant snapchats Thank you very much to Wilderness Medicine for letting us attend their high altitude medicine talk last Wednesday, we hope you all enjoyed it. Many of our leaders and a few keen members are currently taking a Mountain First Aid Course so good luck to them in learning those new skills. There will be sign up as usual this Wednesday 13.30-14.30 in room 3 of the union for any questions and to pay for the Christmas Dinner, see some of you there.

For anyone that missed last week’s email, LUUHC Christmas meal is one of the best events of the year so I really encourage everyone to come
The meal will be held at the Marriott Hotel so black tie please everyone! Here’s your chance to show that you can pull off other looks other than the usual windswept one. The committee will be giving away a few prizes on the night including “Best Dressed” so there’s your incentive to get out the tux! Sign up will be held at 1.30pm in room 3 of the Union and the price will be £26.50. This is your last chance to claim a spot – don’t miss out!
Adam will be posting the meal options on the Facebook event (link below) and you must email him to confirm your choices. You must sign up either on Wednesday or by email before you join the Facebook group.
We will also have a “Secret Santa” – for anyone not familiar with this, everyone buys a present of no more than £5 and wraps it up. On arrival put the present in Santa’s sack and later in the night everyone who put a present in gets to take a present out. That way you don’t have to buy a present for a specific person who you might not know so well – pretty sure someone got cheese last year so use your sense of smell when picking from the sack to avoid disappointment! We should be able to leave presents/heels in the Marriott overnight as we are heading to Wire afterwards. Adam will collect this stuff on Saturday and you can get it back from him. Every year we have a photo competition during the dinner. This year we have divided the competition into three categories: Landscape, People and Funny. Enter as many photos as you like into each category and Jessie will narrow the entries down to a shortlist. On the night we will see the shortlist and vote on which photo we think is the best, winner gets a prize! The photos are shown anonymously but please add a caption to tell us where the photo was taken. Only photos taken on club trips allowed! Email entries to email@example.com competition entries close on Wednesday 26/11/14.

- Those of you signed up to go to Wales next weekend listen up!
- There will be beds (yay) but please bring a sleeping bag, if you do not have one please email firstname.lastname@example.org and you can borrow a club one
- There are showers and toilets, plus a drying room.
- As it is getting colder and darker this time of year you must have additional warm layers, a survival bag, hat and gloves.
- A flask is also a good idea.
- We insist that you must have a head torch because is it now dark so early in the evening – bring spare batteries too!
- We will stop at services on the way there and back for something to eat but please bring enough hill food for lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
- As we have a bit further to drive compared with the Lakes and Snowdonia it is vital that you get to Cromer Terrace by 5.30pm and no later so we can get away quickly.

Alps Talk and Wednesday Social

Matt Fuller, one of the club’s more experienced leaders, will be giving a presentation about Alpine Mountaineering. “Whether you’ve been to the Alps a few times before or have never been, this presentation is for you. Discussing everything from backpacking to hiking to mountaineering, this presentation will provide inspiration on why you want to go, how you might plan a trip, what aspects you need to consider, and will persuade you that going there is not only for the super-hardcore. If you want shedloads of psyche, or want to get planning a trip for next summer or another year in the future, then this presentation is well worth attending.”
Following the talk we will be heading to the German Market for some festive cheer and on to Bierkeller for some dancing on the tables!
Alternatively, the Mountaineers are holding a discount evening with V12 Outdoor to which we are all invited. This starts at 7pm in Parkinson B.08 with 20-50% off. If people want specific items (certain sized shoes, axes, crampons etc) then let Dan Murray (LUUMC President) know and they'll try and bring them.

A few members have already been asking questions about the club’s winter trips. We will try and cover all the relevant info on gear, costs, skills, requirements and risks at the winter briefing. This is a must for anyone wanting to go on the winter trips. The briefing will be followed by a presentation for the international summer trip.
