HIKERS!
*EXCITING NEWS: WE HAVE 2 PLACES LEFT ON OUR SUMMER TRIP TO FORT WILLIAM AND TORRIDON*
The summer trip this year is split so you lucky people get to spend 3 nights in Fort William, taking in the classic area in summer conditions, and 3 nights in Torridon, which boasts some of the best sights in Scotland (apart from our pretty faces). We are camping for the week and cooking food in small groups, so the club will not provide food - you should bring your own. There will be an opportunity to buy more food throughout the week. The reason for this is primarily practical: cooking in a large group when camping can take the best part of a few hours, it is much easier and better for hungry hikers to pair up/cook in smaller groups. Don’t worry if you don’t have your own tent/stove for cooking – not a problem as the club has a number of tents/2 fairly large stoves and a number of people will be willing to pair up. We will create a facebook post for people to pair up in tents/stoves. So key stuff:
*Dates: 3rd – 9th June
*Cost: £110
*Camping – sleeping bags and mats will be necessary, bring your own food.
*We will be meeting at 8.30am on the Sunday, niiiiiiiice and early...summer ballers, what could be a better hangover cure than the thought of the epicness of Scotland?!
Need something to keep you going through exams? Just want something cool to do this summer? Well the summer trip is going to be wicked so get yourself to SIGN UP this Wednesday from 1 - 2pm in The Study.
More excitement comes in the form of the SUMMER BBQ on the 1st June – check out the event Tash has created on facebook -https://www.facebook.com/events/128264967297097/, Hawaiian theme, masses of food, it’s gonna be a good’un! You don't have to be a member to come to the BBQ so bring your mates down, £5 a head, the more the merrier. SIGN UP this Wednesday from 1-2pm in The Study.
Also, check out the updated articles section on the club’s website, some really interesting stuff going on http://www.luuhc.com/articles – if you’ve done any cool stuff we’d love you to write an article if you want to! (when you get the time obviously!) have a read of the ones up there and if you do fancy getting one of your own up there just email it to
.
Good luck to everyone with their revision, watch this space but there may well be some people knocking about in the Eldon on Wednesday if you did fancy a break from it all!
So remember sign up for the last 2 summer trip spaces and the Summer BBQ on Wednesday, keep plugging away at the work and see you all soon :) x

About the hiking club
We are one of the largest clubs at Leeds University and one of the longest running. Although it hasn't always been what it is now. The club was originally called the Youth Hostel Society, and many of the trips that the society ran were based upon this ethos. About 10 years ago it was realised that the club was moving beyond this, into a much more varied and adventurous society. So, the birth of the Hiking Club as it is now came about.
Hikers, climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers are all slightly different, yet we are all basically the same - we love the outdoors. We all spend much of our time thinking about the next opportunity we have to get out there and enjoy it, and the Hiking Club is there to cater for everyone.
Often people have never had much opportunity to get out there, possibly because it was never convenient for them, too expensive or sometimes because they simply don't know where to go. Well, this is why the Hiking Club is here, because we all share the same desire, we come together and make it fun, cheap and convenient.
Our aim is to run one weekend away each month and a day trip on the remaining Sundays during term time. Given the range of experience of our members, we try and plan events that offer everything from easy walks along valleys, right up to adventurous and demanding routes. Safety is of paramount importance and within the society you'll find a large number of experienced people and many who have undergone training in Mountain Leadership and first aid. (More on this in our safety and participation statements.)
Sunday trips are a great way to start, regardless of your hill walking experience, as it’s a great way to meet people and get some exercise. Weekends trips usually involve staying in a mountain hut or camping, always in select locations all over Britain. Weekend trips tend to be a little more demanding so we recommend going on a Sunday trip before going away on a weekend so that you get an idea of how things work. Our winter trips in the early part of the New Year require specialist mountaineering gear like axes and crampons that we can lend out. (Look at the gear guide for more info.)
Somehow when we have energy left over we run social events of which the most notorious stories about the club can often be based on. Although the most vivid memories that people take away from university are those spent undertaking a challenge you never thought possible - in the company of lifelong friends. (More on our socials.)
